What to Know About Postpartum Psychosis
“We’re seeing a lot of patients right now that are frightened by the Clancy case and wondering ‘what if that could be me?’” says therapist Jessica Erickson, co-founder of Sana Psychotherapy. But while these conditions share some of the same overlapping symptoms, postpartum psychosis has some distinctive features.
“With psychosis, a patient will experience a delusion as their reality where they align with the thought, whereas with postpartum anxiety or OCD we see patients that are fearful of the intrusive thoughts that come up and do not feel aligned with them,” Erickson explains. “For as distressing as intrusive thoughts or worries about your baby can be, that fear is protective. It’s when we see alignment with the thought that is cause for concern.”
