Gamete & Embryo Donor Psychological Evaluation
At Sana Psychotherapy, we provide comprehensive psychological evaluations for egg, sperm, and embryo donors in a collaborative and thoughtful environment. Our approach recognizes that there is no “one-size-fits-all” donor experience. People come to donation for many reasons, and we aim to create space for open conversation about motivations, expectations, boundaries, relationships, and future considerations.
Did You Know?
As the leading professional organization in the field of third-party reproduction, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) recommends psychological evaluations as part of the screening process for many third-party reproduction arrangements, including egg, sperm, embryo, and gestational carrier journeys.
ASRM guidelines emphasize the importance of exploring not only emotional wellbeing, but also factors such as informed consent, expectations about future contact, relationship dynamics, support systems, coping styles, and understanding of the medical and legal process.
In some cases, standardized psychological testing, such as the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI), may also be recommended or required as part of a comprehensive evaluation.
These evaluations are intended to support thoughtful decision-making and help ensure that donors, intended parents, and gestational carriers feel informed, prepared, and supported throughout the process.
What to Expect
Choosing to become a sperm, egg, or embryo donor is a meaningful decision that can carry emotional, relational, ethical, and psychological considerations. Donor evaluations are designed to support informed decision-making while helping intended parents, donors, agencies, and clinics meet recommended professional guidelines.
Evaluations typically explore areas such as:
Understanding of the donation process and potential emotional impact
Expectations around anonymity, contact, or future relationships
Family, partner, or support system dynamics
Emotional wellbeing and coping strategies
Medical and reproductive history
Thoughts and feelings about genetic connection, disclosure, and future offspring
Readiness for the practical and emotional aspects of donation
We understand that these conversations can feel vulnerable, especially in a process that is often highly medicalized or procedural. Our goal is not simply to “clear” someone for donation, but to provide a space for reflection, education, and support throughout the process.
Evaluations are conducted in accordance with current professional and ethical guidelines and may include a clinical interview, standardized psychological assessment measures when required, and coordination with clinics or agencies as appropriate.
We work with individuals pursuing directed and non-identified donation arrangements, including directed donation between family members or friends.
If you are considering becoming a donor and would like to learn more about the evaluation process, we welcome you to reach out for a consultation.
